It was an exceedingly normal, frigid February day...except, of course, that it was Finch and Fiona Finlay's 16th birthday.

Oh, and one other thing: magic suddenly descends upon every teenager on Earth. But one thing becomes clear immediately: there are consequences to using magic, and for some, the results are unthinkable.

If that's not bad enough, Fiona mysteriously disappears.

Now Finch must grapple with his newfound magical abilities, and his fear of, well, everything to go in search of her. Not to mention the discovery that he and Fiona are caught in an eons old conflict that he wants nothing to do with, thank you very much.

Except that he has no choice, if he wants Fiona - and every teenager on Earth besides - to live.

Turns out, being able to do magic isn't so wonderful after all.
